Captain Watson was Skipper of the Uss Hamul AD20 and came over to he Uss Isle Royale after the Hamul's Decommissioning.

Captain Guy Edward Hearn
 1963-1964

For his last tour at sea, Captain Hearn commanded the destroyer tender, ISLE ROYALE (AD 29) for one year. On 31 August, 1964, Ed retired, and with Maggie, decided to remain in Long Beach, California.

H L Kubel Captain USN
1965-1966

Captain Kubel comes the ISLE ROYALE from the staff of Commander Military Sea Transportation Service, Far East, Yokohama, Japan, where he served as the Chief Staff Officer. He was born in Sacramento, California on 3 September 1920. He graduated from the California Maritime Academy in 1941. He received his commission on 3 May 1942 after attending the USNR Midshipmen School at Annapolis Maryland. Subsequently, he attended the U.S. Navy Salvage and Diving School in New York, N.Y. and later, he participated in the Salvaging of the USS LAFAYETTE. Captain Kubel was executive officer of the USS BLUE (DD 744) during the Korean War and executive officer of the USS Providence (CLG-6) in 1961-1962. He commanded the TWINING (DD 540) 1955-1957 He ha also served as Commanding Officer, U.S. Navel Reserve Training Center, Stockton, California and on the staff of Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet and the Chief of Navel Operations. Captain Kubel holds the American Campaign; Asiatic Pacific; World War II Victory; Navy Occupation; National Defense; China Service; United Nations Service; Korean Service; and Korean Presidential Unit Citation Medals.

 

 

 

Royal W Baker
1967 TO 1968

Captain Baker come to the Isle Royale from the office of Naval Operations where he served as HEAD Gunnery Readiness Section. He was born in ELK Grove California on 12, February 1923. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and received his commission on 14, December 1944 after attending USNR Midshipman School at Columbia University, New York. He then served in Underwater Demolition Teams until November 1949.  During the Korean War, Captain Baker served aboard the USS Saint Paul (CA-72). He was Executive Officer of the USS Cogswell (DD-651) in 1956/1958 and commanded the USS Alfred A. Conningham (DD-752) in 1961-1963

I served as CO of Isle Royale from June1968 until December 1969. I retired from the Navy about six months later after a short stint at the Naval Base in Long Beach. After retiring, I worked for Litton for ten years while we designed, built and delivered 30 Spruance Class Destroyers to the Navy. CAPTAIN  Philip R. Bush
1969-1970

Captain Bush was born in Janesville, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin before enlisting in the Navy early in 1943. After serving in a variety of assignments he entered the Navy V-12 program at Oberlin College and subsequently graduated from the NROTC Unit at the University of Virginia in June 1946. Immediately after commissioning he served as a turret officer in the USS Los Angeles (CA 135) on China Station. After completing the Electronics Material Course at Treasure Island he served in USS Bairoko (CVE 115) and USS Rendova (CVE 114), during which time the ships participated in the nuclear tests at Eniwetok and the evacuation of Marine Fighter Squadron 211 from the mainland of China in 1949.

In 1950-51 Captain Bush served in USS Burton Island (AGB 1) during five Arctic oceanographic research and Point Barrow re-supply expeditions. During 1952 and 1953 he served in the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project. After completing the General Line School in 1954 he served as Executive Officer, USS Naifeh (DE 352) until 1957 when he was assigned to the Staff, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif.

In 1959-60 he attended the Command and Staff Course at the Naval War College and subsequently served as Navigator, USS Rochester (CA 124) and as Executive Officer, USS Samuel N. Moore (DD 747). In August 1962 he returned as a member of the instructional staff at the Naval War College.

In July 1965 he assumed command of USS Harry E. Hubbard (DD 748) and during this tour of duty participated in extensive naval gunfire support and SEA DRAGON operations off the coast of Viet Nam. In November 1967, he reported to the Joint Staff, Joint Chiefs of Staff and served as an Operations Officer in the National Military Command Center for a year before assuming duties as the Senior Military Representative, Department of State Operations Center.

Following his tour on the Joint Staff, Captain Bush served as Commanding Officer, USS Isle Royale (AD 29) and as Commander, Destroyer Division 92.

Captain Bush was graduated from the School of Command and Staff and the School of Naval Warfare, Naval War College and has a degree in Political Science, Government and International Affairs form George Washington University. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V", a gold star in lieu of a second Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V", the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm.
