The United States Navy Bureau of
Ships contracted the Todd Pacific Shipyard Inc. of Seattle, Washington
to build a Hamul Class Destroyer Tender. Her keel was laid 12-16-1944 and
she was completed on 9-14-1945, and was launch on 9-14-1945. She was
assigned to the Reserve Fleet and shipped down to San Diego as an inactive
vessel. later she was sent to Long Beach Naval Base Ca. where she
served as working ship for Pacific Reserve Fleet. Some time in 1961 The Uss
Isle Royale was designated to replace the Uss Hamul AD20, The Isle Royale
was moved to the Long Beach Shipyard to under go repairs for her
Commissioning, she was commissioned on 6-9-1962 where the Officers and
enlisted men were transferred to her. She was the taken on a shakedown
cruise. After her shakedown cruise she then was assigned to Long Beach to
begin her service to the Pacific Fleet Destroyers by supplying them with
parts and major repair.

In 1963 The Uss Isle Royale was
assigned to the (Pineapple Fleet) Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for service to
the roaming Destroyers of Pacific Fleet. She worked between Pearl
Harbor and Long Beach staying six months in each place until August of 1965,
while in Pearl Harbor she received orders to depart from Pearl Harbor to the
Philippines. About August 15, 1965 she departed Ford Island headed west to
the Philippines where she started her service in the 7th fleet servicing the
fighting ships in the 7th Fleet. Her Ports of Call on this tour of duty
were: Subic Bay Philippines, Kaohsiung Taiwan, Yokosuka Japan, and then back
to Long Beach, California, and in port by March 5, 1966.
The Uss Isle Royale stayed in Long
Beach providing service to the Pacific Fleet until September 16, 1966
when she departed for Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, then departed from there for her
second Westpac Cruise on September 24, 1966 her Ports of Call on this tour
of duty were: Yokosuka Japan, Kaohsiung Taiwan while we were in Taiwan we
received new movement orders to proceed to Chi Lai South Vietnam. After
spending 19 days there we departed Vietnam for Subic Bay Philippines, the
rest of our Ports of Call were: Hong Kong for six wonderful days of R&R,
then back to Subic Bay Philippines, then Home to Long Beach California,
arriving around March 14 1967.
The Uss Isle Royale spent about
six months in Long Beach on or about 10 September 1967 she departed on
the third and final Westpac Cruise where her Ports of Call for the last time
were: Subic Bay Philippines, Kaohsiung Taiwan, Yokosuka Japan arriving back
to Long Beach, California on or about 22 February 1968. In or about November
1968 she departed to Hawaii and for the next two years between there and
Long Beach, California, while in Pearl Harbor Hawaii for the last time she
was given orders to be Decommissioned. On 11 March 1970 the Uss
Isle Royal AD29 was Decommissioned and turned over to MARAD September 1,
1971 who then in 1971 put her in Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet
and was stricken in September 15, 1976 by the Navy for stripping in
Pearl Harbor, prior to sale, in December 21, 1977. She was
then sold for non-transportation use to Waterman Supply Co.
Waterman Supply Co. Took delivery on January 1978 and striped all
of the usable parts then resold her to International steel Co.
to be scraped.
